# How to Segment Your Contacts

### What is segmenting?

Segmenting your contacts means splitting your list into smaller groups based on shared attributes (e.g., subscription status).

Commonly segmented groups include:

* Purchasing habits,
* Needs,
* Lifestyle,
* Age,
* and Interests.

Segmenting helps you manage your list more efficiently, and it can also be a strong marketing strategy. When your list is organized into custom segments, you can better personalize your messaging and communicate more effectively with different groups of contacts.

### Why segment your contacts?

In short, segmenting improves how you manage your list and helps you design personalized marketing that speaks more directly to your contacts.

When you send broad, one-size-fits-all messaging to everyone, results tend to be inconsistent. Some contacts may respond well, while others won’t. Even if a campaign performs well for part of your list, it may miss the mark for others, which can lead to contacts unsubscribing or even blocking you.

Segmenting your Contacts can help you:

* Increase engagement by designing <mark style="color:red;">marketing campaigns</mark> specific to groups of contacts based on similar attributes such as products owned, emails received, custom [tags](/hifunnel-help-center/documentation/contacts/manage-your-contacts/how-to-use-tags.md#what-are-tags) and more;
* Spot patterns and trends using <mark style="color:red;">automations and tags</mark>, then assigning each to a custom segment;
* Review your Customer's <mark style="color:red;">Product Progress</mark> and keep your stats focused;
* Efficiently [manage your Contacts tab](/hifunnel-help-center/documentation/contacts/manage-your-contacts/contacts-tab-overview.md) by quickly moving between specific Segments.

Segment your contacts and take control of your list to enhance and personalize your contacts experience with your brand and your business at every touchpoint.
